CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Princess Rosalina
CANON: Super Mario Bros.
CANON POINT: Mario canon is very loose, but let's say post Super Mario 3D World
CHARACTER AGE: By all intents and purposes, many thousands of years.
HISTORY: Early life
Role in the series.
[note - please exclude Smash Bros. from her background. While it is being used as the basis for her abilities, the Rosalina of that series is an trophy brought to life, not Rosalina herself]
PERSONALITY: Rosalina is a lot older than she looks, having lived for countless years thanks to her life amongst the stars. Originally a simple princess from the same world as the Mushroom Kingdom, she's seen a great deal many things in the ages since. As such, Rosalina has not only seen it all, she is very wise, mature, and has insight into the mysteries of the galaxy, including the cycles of rebirth for planets, galaxies, and even the universe itself.
One of the strongest aspects to Rosalina's personality is that she is motherly. In taking care of the Lumas, her family has been vast, and she has helped many of them go on to find a particular place in the cosmos. She is extremely caring towards generally everyone she meets, and even her efforts to guide Mario are done with a soft sort of parental guidance. Even when she acts in opposition to someone, or even engages in playful teasing, this influences her behavior, and it is generally regarded that she is incapable of being cruel or malicious.
That being said, Rosalina is rather lonely. Though she has been surrounded by her family of Lumas for many years, she has also seen them go on to become new galaxies. Just as many of them are precious to her, they come in and out of her life with great frequency. This has led Rosalina to become very motherly, but she feels she does not have the ability to experience relationships with others in the same ways they do due to her timelessness. When she was younger, she was in denial about the death of her mother, and even in the many, many years since, she still feels a great deal of regret. In a sense, it informs her every action, and her caring for the Lumas is in many ways meant to fill the void losing her mother felt in her life.
That being said, since she's developed a connection with the people of the Mushroom Kingdom, a new side of Rosalina has emerged. In the spin-offs, she displays a competitive and prideful side, showing more adult sensibilities than the sweetly naive Peach and the tomboyish Daisy. In the contests and competitions she underoes, she at last has a chance to cut loose and enjoy herself. This was something she missed even in her eons past childhood, which causes her to embrace these chances most readily.
This can a double edged sword, however. As seen in spin-offs, such as her appearance in the Mario Golf series, Rosalina can tend to react to victory with both childlike excitement and overdramatic disappointment. She's seen fainting at getting a bogey, showing that she places great importance upon success and that she doesn't consider losing to even be an option. Likewise, she can be as fiercely competitive as Bowser, and though she is not prone to abusing or cheating by any means, she will cast aside her motherly concern and ultimately play to win.
Outside of such things, she's prone to good natured teasing and playfulness when the mood and situation warrants it. With some, Rosalina is likely to be as warm and motherly as she is with the Lumas, while with others, she'll be more open, playful, and perhaps even catty and flirtacious, though in a more mild and subdued manner.
All in all, Rosalina is discovering as many new things as she has already seen. Even for all her many years, there are many aspects to her life that she has yet to live, and they involve friendship and people. In a way it mirrors the cycle of the universe, with new possibilities being born for her much in the same way new galaxies are formed, and she's eager to exprience them all.
ABILITIES: [Note - Based on a discussion with the mods, Rosalina's primary abilities are primarily based upon her portrayal in the Super Smash Bros. series, with the addition of her spin attack in Super Mario 3D World. The one exception is the removal of abilities that involve her Luma partner, as the game is not a good place to bring a baby star creature]
In her world of origin, Rosalina's powers are vast. However, in coming to this one, she's found that due to the magic here, her abilities have changed somewhat.
Rosalina's most basic offensive ability is the use of a spin attack that launches her upwards a short distance and surrounds her in a circle of stars that both defend and do moderate damage to whatever hits them. She also wields a wand with a star at the end of it, which makes a surprising melee weapon. Normally, she employs it to direct a Luma's own ability to attack and make them synchronous, but without a Luma at her side, this ability is immaterial. Finally, she can also create a small barrier around herself for defense, but as opposed to the barriers she's able to generate in her homeworld, this is much smaller, weaker and degrades over time.
Rosalina can fire a wave of miniature glowing, multi-colored stars from her wand as well, effectively granting her a short range projectile. [Note - Rosalina needs the Luma to do this in Super Smash Bros., but given her Luma are staying home, I don't tink it unreasonable that Rosalina get the ability herself.]
For situations that require her to rise to the occassion, Rosalina can summon a Launch Star with which to shoot herself into the air. The Launch Star is generated by her magic, and shoots Rosalina at multiple angles as if she were a living comet. She can also summon a small blue "Star Cursor" around her body in order to create a "Gravitational Pull" that draws objects and people closer to herself. This can be used to nullify projectiles thrown at her, or to grab ahold of people and objects prior to throwing them away[this last part is based upon the "Catch & Release" variation of the move.]
Finally, due to her long exposure to them, Rosalina can summon the power of a Power Star, which she calls forth from within herself. This is reserved for the last of last ditch efforts, and leaves Rosalina exhausted, meaning she cannot use it multiple times. When performing it, she summons the star, which grows to massive size and the proceeds to send streams of stars in multiple directions before finally releasing an explosion of cosmic energy.
Aside from that, Rosalina is deceptively agile and atheletic, and due to her many years of life, she is rather sensible and experienced, which affords her good judgement in most situations. She is not easily prone to anger, and generally keeps a cool head about herself.
SINS & VIRTUES: As caring and devoted to serving as a guide to others as Rosalina is, she is still very prideful. In the spin offs, her jubilation over victory can be as over the top as even that of Bowser. Likewise, losing or defeat takes a toll on her. The high place she fills in the cosmos can lead to a sense of self importance, after all, even when it is entirely deserved, and she's not even used to thinking there's something she's not capable of. As for virtues, Rosalina definitely shows kindness and generosity, both in her taking care of the Lumas and her desire to help Mario on his journey. She also sometimes shows envy in that she wishes she could have the stability and companionship others have.
